In June of 1998 an announcement alerted all students at my school that there was a France trip to take place in Easter 1999, and all of those interested were to attend a meeting at noon hour.  At least twenty people showed up at the second meeting (the first time not many came because not everyone heard the announcement or remembered).  Many people decided not to go after they heard the cost or because they wanted something else more than they wanted the trip.  That same spring we had a parents meeting, and the first payment had to be made.  In total 14 students from Nanton planned on going, even though two of them were going to attend school in Claresholm the following year.

In preparation for this trip we had meetings once or twice a month starting in October and getting more frequent towards the Easter holiday. At the meetings we went over things such as how to exchange money, history of the chateaux of the Loire Valley, itinerary, how to use the Parisian Metro, how to behave in a foreign country, places in France that we would visit, history and description of some of the cities we would visit, and packing information.  To pay for the tips to the bus driver and tour guides, etc. we did some fund-raising:  we were each given 60$ worth of chocolate to sell, and we had to turn in that amount of money whether we had all of the chocolates sold or not.

About two weeks (longer for some people) before we left just about everyone going was getting quite exited about it, but Mike said he wasn't going to be exited until the day we left or until we were on the plane. I told people I wouldn't be until the day we left, if then.
