Day Four/April 4th
I got up at 7:00 in order
to shower before breakfast (same as every other day) at 8:00. We
left on the bus at 9:00 for Cannes. Cannes is a city famous for its
film festival and beaches. It was built over a marsh and is now quite
a tourist attraction. Luckily for us, we were not there during the
time of the film festival, for if we were then we would have had difficulty
getting anywhere and would have quickly become lost.
I walked around with Mike, Scott, Victor, and Matt; we went to several stores before heading to the beach where we saw some sights not to see (topless old women). When we went on the beach we walked for a while until we arrived at an area with beach cots and sat down on one of them. After a while a man came along and told us (in French - I translated for the others) that we had to pay about 80F or leave the area. Matt didn't really want to leave because there was a good looking woman whom Matt hoped would take off her bikini. I didn't think she would, but we left for the obviously public area before we found out. It was there that we swam. We went to the far end of the beach (away from the area with rental cots) and stayed there for a while. Mike, Scott, and I did "swim" in the Mediterranean, but Victor and Matt were too wimpy. We didn't actually swim, but we did get completely submerged. Mike and Scott started out slowly easing themselves into the water, so I showed them the proper way - just run straight in. It worked quite well for them, and they didn't whine and complain too much after that. The water was too cold to stay in for long, so after our brief stay in the water we stood around on the shore and warmed up, dried off, and changed again. Because there were no public changing facilities we had to change under our towels. After the beach we headed to «MacDo» (McDonalds) where Scott, Victor, Mike, and Matt bought lunch. I ate about one and a half burgers as well as the better part of a container of fries that the others did not want to finish. Once finished there, we walked around town looking for stores that might have things that we were interested in buying. They bought some stuff, but since I saw nothing that interested me, I held off. While walking past the seafood vendors, I commented that it smelled good, but the others strongly disliked the odour. I bought a sub style sandwich for lunch: the bun was hard and it was very greasy, but it tasted good. After we left Cannes, we went to Grasse where we visited the «Fragonard» perfume factory. The tour guide spoke very good English, but spoke too fast for us to understand with her accent. After each time she spoke she asked if we had any questions, and no one did because we hadn't heard more that half of what she said. One thing I did catch is that the head person at the factory is called "the nose" and he must take seven years of training. He gets paid very well paid, only works four days a week, and doesn't have to work if he gets a cold. Many of us (including some girls) couldn't wait to get out of the building because of its strong small of perfume. After the tour we were taken downstairs and given a bunch of samples and encouraged (by the guide) to buy perfume for those back at home. (My understanding is that the guide got a commission based on how much we bought.) I soon left the building and went to the bus. The bus was very hot inside, and outside it smelled of perfume. I spent some of the time in the bus and some outside. We were each given a small sample of something and told not to open it on the bus. I was more than happy to comply with this request because I had a slight headache from the smell of that factory. After the perfume factory we boarded the bus again and headed off to St. Paul de Vence, which is an old walled town.
