Day Three/April 3rd

Got up in time for breakfast of orange juice, baguette and croissant at 8:00.  The bun had a hard crust and didn't taste particularly good, but the croissant was excellent.  At 9:00 we left by bus for Monaco and while still in Nice we drove along the Promenade des Anglais.

A famous building we saw along the way was the «Villa American Express», which is called that because its owner is an executive with American Express.  It is also the most expensive piece of property along the Riviera, where all property is quite expensive.

In Monaco we saw where the Monte Carlo Grand Prix is held, the royal palace, the princesses' houses, the royal church, and the Musée Océanographique.  We were misinformed about where was best to stand to see the changing of the guard, but from what I did see there wasn't much to it.  When we were walking around some of the narrow streets shopping, Scott was looking at a bracelet for Katie.  When he tried to remove it from the rack to go and purchase it one of the shopkeepers began to yell at him and one of the words she said was police.  The other shopkeeper was much more understanding but told him that he should have asked one of them to remove it.  For lunch I bought a ham sandwich which was somewhat like a sub.

I went into the Musée Océanographique with Matt and Mike.  We first went into the aquarium area and looked at the many different exotic species of fish.  We all took pictures of the cuttlefish in their tank, although Mike's picture turned out the best.  After looking at the aquarium section of the museum we headed to some of the other levels of the museum and looked at the many interesting things there.

On one level there were several whale skeletons including a very large one.  We also visited the roof where we got an excellent view of Monaco and Monte Carlo. After finishing in the musée we went back to the bus in its underground parking garage and went on to Monte Carlo, where we were dropped on the side of the road.  We walked from there to the square in front of Casino Monte Carlo.  We were given some free time to look around so I walked for a bit with Mike, Victor, Matt, and Scott.  We took a short walk then returned to the steps in the park where we sat down to wait for everyone else to come.  On the way back to be picked up by the bus Scott took Matt's picture beside one of the nice cars (very expensive), and Matt took Scott's picture beside the car.

After a long wait for the bus, we finally boarded and were on our way back to Nice, first stopping at Eze.  Eze is an old walled town with a castle at the center, which was designed to protect it from medieval invaders.  We were given time to explore the old town and do some shopping in the many little stores occupying the rooms of the town.  I looked around as much of the town as possible in the time given, but never figured out how to get to the top/castle part.  This led me to understand why these towns worked so well against invaders - they would never be able to find their way around, and the soldiers would get so lost and spread out that they would never be able to do much damage.

Once we finished here we went back to the bus that took us to Nice.  We had some free time in the hotel where we able to relax, talk or whatever.  Once again we ate supper at «Hôtel Frank Zurich».  This night we ate very small rations of cordon bleu along with salad.  After supper we went back to the hotel where I put on my coat for a walk to and along the «Promenade des Anglais».  I walked beside Mike and a girl from Claresholm, Shieghla.  I tested the temperature of the water, but almost got my feet wet in doing so.  From what I figured, it was fairly cold, but not quite as cold as the Gulf of St. Lawrence.  This night was similar to most others: we talked and went to bed about midnight.
